Why don't we switch to traffic lights on the other side? Why doesn't Australia switch to lights on this side of the intersection? Because it has always been this way, and a change would mean a lot of money, would take decades until all traffic poles have been changed eventually, and it would mean a hell of a lot of confusion, which is not at all helpful (after all, the traffic lights are there in the first place to avoid confusion, we could just leave it away completely and let the drivers negotiate, that would be chaos). People would either stop in the middle of the intersection, or learn that passing a red light is doable, so they would go through red lights at other (illegal) occasions easier. Even if we would adjust the law to allow that, it would be counterintuitive.
If the traffic lights were on the opposite side of the intersection, people who turn would have to pass through a red light. (PS this is not at all an aggressive post. To me it just seem such a better solution to have it on the opposite side of the road. Usually I’ve found German’s have very strong logic behind everything they do. But on the right hand side pointing left. I literally have to have me head half out the window to see them.Īlso yesterday I was turning left, managed to put my head out the window to look at the lights and wait for the arrow.Īnd I was beeped because there was a green arrow. Is there a reason or benefit to the lights being completely above you when stopped? So easy to see.Īlso out “turn arrows” are on the side to where you are turning. So in Australia our traffic lights are on the opposite side of the road.
